ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Tuesday, Phoebe Putney Health System will reach a milestone in its fight against COVID-19.
The hospital system will surpass 10,000 vaccines administered.
Through Monday, 9,326 vaccines were given across Phoebe’s vaccinations sites in Albany, Americus and Sylvester. The hospital system is expected to give an additional 1,100 vaccines on Tuesday.
“We want to continually grow our capacity to put shots in arms and protect more Southwest Georgians from this virus. The work that has gone into our vaccination effort is truly incredible, and it’s running like clockwork,” said Scott Steiner, the Phoebe Putney Health System president and CEO.
The call volume to the Phoebe COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline has been extraordinarily high. Currently, only healthcare workers, first responders, and those 65 and over are eligible to be vaccinated.
Georgia county plans new morgue, citing lack of space

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) Leaders of a southwest Georgia county are planning a new morgue, saying there’s not enough room to keep using the local hospital’s morgue.
Dougherty County commissioners on Monday accepted a proposal for architectural and engineering services. The county plans to pay for the project out of local sales tax money.
County Coroner Michael Fowler told WALB-TV that the county is examining how much space it needs, where the morgue should be built and how much it will cost.

The county now uses the morgue at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Fowler said, but said deaths from COVID-19 have left space scarce.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Health System is seeing more hospitalized COVID-19 patients at a higher rate than it was before the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the hospital system.
“Today, our volume of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is nearly five and a half times what it was the week before Thanksgiving, and as transmission rates remain high throughout Georgia, we expect our volume to continue to increase.” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System CEO and president. “The greatest weapons in our fight against the virus are wearing masks and getting the COVID-19 vaccine.”
