Cash-strapped workers seek reduction in monthly rates for rental units

Some 200 garment workers gathered on May 10 on Veng Sreng Street in Stung Meanchey III commune’s Damnak Thum Pir village in the capital’s Meanchey district to demand that the Phnom Penh municipal authorities help facilitate a 50 per cent reduction in monthly rates for rental units.
Cambodian Labour Confederation president Ath Thon told The Post on May 11 that the workers made the demand because they had not received their wages due to the lockdown. This came after Prime Minister Hun Sen urged landlords to reduce monthly rates as their tenants had encountered extreme financial difficulties.
The Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) Index maintained a bullish trend and reached peak at 648.33 points mid-lockdown before cooling back down, despite remaining flat in the days prior to the restrictive measure.
The government first placed Phnom Penh and adjacent Takmao town in Kandal province under lockdown on April 15, in a move to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission from the February 20 community outbreak. It extended it for another seven days until May 5.
Trading activity spiked across the board during the lockdown, with daily average trading values and volumes increasing by approximately 13 and 19 per cent respectively, CSX said in a press release late last week, citing data compiled from April 1 to May 5.
PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia on Saturday (May 8) confirmed a daily record of 538 Covid-19 cases, bringing the national case tally to 18,717, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) announced on (Saturday) May 8 that they will not require workers and students from 870 locations in the red zones of Phnom Penh and adjacent Takmao town in Kandal province to pay their bills for March, April and May.

The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) announced on May 8 that they will not require workers and students from 870 locations in the red zones of Phnom Penh and adjacent Takmao town in Kandal province to pay their bills for March, April and May.
PPWSA said the billing exemption was at the behest of Prime Minster Hun Sen who on May 8 appealed to PPWSA and Electricite du Cambodge (EdC) to show sympathy for cash-strapped workers and students in the red zones by not charging them for utilities.
