Chisem’s stay in Santa Cruz. (Contributed) It was a chance meeting in a far-away place, that would bring Santa Cruz one of its landmarks. About 1906, American Warren Garret arrived in Guaymas, Mexico, with his wife Euphemia, in search of Indigenous Mexicans to interview. The Garrett’s admired the dusty little town for its natural setting, on the West Coast of the Sonora desert facing the Gulf of California. When introduced to Don Pedro B. Chisem as a man who knew the natives, Garrett was pleased to find a modest 67-year-old who spoke fluent English. However, Chisem had some misgivings. He’d gained the trust of his native workers, giving them jobs in ranching, farming and mining, and thus didn’t want them to be exploited.
