FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) The state has activated the Mass Fatality Program for the first time.
With 142 Californians killed by the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, Governor Gavin Newsom is ordering 5,000 additional body bags.
It s a grim reminder of the rising death toll from COVID-19.
At the Fresno County Coroner s Office, empty body bags are lined up and a refrigeration truck sits empty - for now. This is our line of work. We have to always have to keep our supplies up. We don t want people to be startled by the fact that we have extra supplies. They are going to get used in due time. At the same time we just have to be prepared, if this wave with COVID does come we have to be prepared to handle it, says Tony Botti with the Fresno County Sheriff s Office.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) You can take part in a week-long blood drive and help save lives this holiday season.
The Fresno County Sheriff s Office is teaming up with the Central California Blood Center to put on the Holiday Heroes Drive at the Clovis Rodeo Hall this week.
You can make a donation each day from 1 pm to 6 pm through this Friday, December 18.
Organizers say donations are especially crucial during the holiday season when most of their blood banks run low.

Officials with the sheriff s office are reminding everyone they do not ask for payments over the phone.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Someone is pretending to be a lieutenant with the Fresno County Sheriff s Office, making phony phone calls.
Investigators say a man identifying himself as Lieutenant Ryan Gilbert is calling from a number that even looks like it s coming directly from the Sheriff s Office.
The scammer claims to have an outstanding warrant for the person s arrest and tells them they must pay a certain amount of money to avoid fines.
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) A 56-year-old Fresno man was arrested for molesting children near Easton, and detectives believe there may be more victims.
The Fresno County Sheriff s Office said Erasto Vasquez was arrested in September for the sex crimes that occurred in the 1990s.
He was charged with lewd and lascivious acts with children under 14, and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
Investigators are now searching for other victims who could ve been sexually assaulted by Vasquez.
