After a series of circumstances that have kept maritime fans off the boat for much of the last several years, the William A. Irvin is open to visitors as of 10 am Friday, May 21.
This marks the start of their first full season since repairs were made to the Irvin, which included towing the ship to Fraser Shipyards in Superior where it spent time in dry dock for repair.
The Irvin was eased out of the Minnesota Slip in September 2018, repairs to hull corrosion were made, and it was returned to its Canal Park Home in mid-October 2019. Due to the repair project, followed by the pandemic in 2020, the Irvin hasn t seen visitors for a good few years.

Superior firefighters work to enter a small hole in a hallway onboard the Edward L. Ryerson to save a person during a training exercise at Fraser Shipyards on Thursday morning, May 13, 2021. The firefighters have been studying confined spaces rescue and were given the opportunity to use some of the techniques they’ve been learning about. (Jed Carlson / jcarlson@superiortelegram.com)
Superior fire engines converged on Fraser Shipyards on Thursday, May 13. They were answering a call for a worker, “Fred,” who had fallen into a space between the hulls below the waterline of the Edward L. Ryerson.

The cleanup of decades old contaminated sediment in the St. Louis River will begin next week. The EPA said the work extends from Hughitt Slip to the head of Howard s Bay, near 5th and Main Street in Superior.
It s a combination of routine navigation dredging along with environmental restoration. The contractor is finishing up the navigational work this week, shared Corey Weston, Chief of Construction and Survey Section for the USACE, Detroit District. We haven t had the opportunity to dredge this area in 20+ years, to this magnitude.
A mechanical dredge will be removing approximately 75,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. It will be disposed at the Wisconsin Point Landfill, where a protective barrier of soil will cover the sediment.
CATAWBA ISLAND - Warm temperatures and good weather are the lifeblood of the Miller Boat Line.
Every 20 minutes in the summer ferries full of vehicles and families looking to explore or grab dinner and a drink fill the Miller ferry as it crashes against rocking waves as it heads to South Bass Island.
Thanks to some late spring-like temperatures, mostly hovering around 60 degrees this week, Friday s start to the Miller Boat Line season is perfect timing as trips to Middle Bass Island will resume for the service beginning March 26.
But a busy spring and summer in 2021 would be a stark contrast to 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into plans for another popular season for the Miller Boat Line and Jet Express.
