At Framingham School Policing Forum, Students Say Just Listen

UpdatedThu, Apr 8, 2021 at 8:51 am ET Reply Framingham school resource officer Jay Ball attending a June protest with students. (Neal McNamara/Patch) FRAMINGHAM, MA A forum held Wednesday on police in Framingham schools drew dozens of attendees, including local elected officials, experts and students who say the presence of officers in schools is harmful to their education. The forum was a collaboration between the group Framingham Families for Racial Equity in Education (FFREE) and Framingham State University. FFREE has since last summer advocated for the removal school resource officers (SROs) from Framingham High School and Keefe Tech. The group collected hundreds of signatures on a petition for the removal effort last year.

Central Mass colleges in line for expected $100M in aid

Colleges in Central Massachusetts are due to receive an estimated $100 million among them under the latest federal pandemic aid program. The most funds will go towards colleges whose students are more likely to receive financial-need-based Pell Grants, including Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, due to receive more than $18 million, and Worcester State University, which is in line for more than $13 million, according to the Washington, D.C., industry group American Council on Education. Half of the amount each college receives must go toward student grants, a similar standard put in place last year when colleges nationwide first received coronavirus pandemic-related aid. In that case last April, Central Massachusetts colleges received a total of $33 million.
