An MBTA Commuter Rail train on the Haverhill line travels through Andover. (Jesse Costa/WBUR) As ridership continues to dip during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has begun its service reductions for both the Commuter Rail and ferry rides. The change removes weekend service from seven Commuter Rail lines and the Charlestown ferry service has been suspended indefinitely, according to a statement from the MBTA. Direct ferry service from Hingham to Rowe s Wharf has also been ceased. The changes went into effect as of Saturday, January 23. Weekend Commuter Rail service will now only be available on the Newburyport/Rockport, Framingham/Worcester, Fairmount, Providence, and Middleborough lines.

MBTA Commuter Rail Service Cuts Start This Weekend Here s What to Know

The new schedule changes come after fall 2020 weekday ridership decreased to just 8% of the ridership seen in the fall of 2019. Additional trains will be added to the Middleborough, Fairmount and Newbury/Rockport Lines to help fill service gaps from the previous schedule, according to the MBTA. The public transportation authority has introduced electrostatic sprayers and other technologies to aid in the sanitization process amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This is part of the MBTA s enhanced cleaning process, which also includes added attention to touch services and air filtration systems, according to the statement. The MBTA may not have many riders during the pandemic, but the NBC10 Boston Investigators found some employees doubling their salaries in overtime.

New Hampshire schools face virus-related loss of funds

By The Associated PressJanuary 23, 2021 GMT School districts across New Hampshire are losing money because the state’s funding formula is based on metrics heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Sixteen mayors and school board leaders wrote to Gov. Chris Sununu and legislative leaders this week expressing their concerns. They explained that while districts have been providing more free meals than ever to students, fewer families have filled out the paperwork to document participation in the free and reduced price meal program. Because the funding formula is based in part on enrollment in the program, Manchester, for example, faces a $3.6 million decrease in funding.

Weekend Commuter Rail Service Ending on Seven Lines This Month

Commuter rail riders will feel the pinch of reduced weekend schedules later this month. In the first salvo of MBTA service cuts approved in December, trains starting Jan. 23 will no longer run on weekends on the commuter rail s Fitchburg, Franklin, Greenbush, Haverhill, Kingston/Plymouth, Lowell and Needham Lines. Five lines the Newburyport/Rockport, Framingham/Worcester, Fairmount, Providence and Middleborough Lines will continue to run some weekend service at lower frequencies. In a press release announcing the start date, the MBTA pitched the schedule changes as a boon for riders, noting that Jan. 23 will also bring slight increases to the number of trains running on weekdays and will offer more than half as much weekday service as last year even though ridership is less than 10% of pre-pandemic levels.
