Giving back: UK charities dig deep during Ramadan

LONDON: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected how people around the world are marking Ramadan, including how they are able to practice charitable giving, which is an important aspect of the holy month. International charities in the UK have adjusted their fundraising initiatives because an increasing number in Britain are struggling to make ends meet. “Ramadan this time looks very different for us,” Sarah Ashraf, community services manager at the international humanitarian charity Penny Appeal, told Arab News.  “We have seen a massive change as there are people who are on reduced hours, on furlough, or have lost their jobs. These people are struggling financially. There is a massive need out there and if I am being honest, we are only scratching the surface.”

Press Briefing by Press Secretary Jen Psaki, April 21, 2021

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room 12:29 P.M. EDT Q    Hi, good afternoon. MS. PSAKI:  Good afternoon.  Okay.  Today, the President will announce that on Thursday he expects he will meet his goal of 200 million shots administered in 100 days or under 100 days, I should say a goal he doubled after meeting his original goal of 100 million shots by day 58 of his presidency. As the administration as we work to get even more people vaccinated, President Biden will call on employers across America to do everything they can to help their employees and their communities get vaccinated. That includes a tax credit for small- and medium-sized businesses to fully offset the cost of paid leave for employees to get vaccinated and recover from any aftereffects of vaccination if needed, and a call for employers, large and small, to take additional steps to help get their employees and communities vaccinated.

Refugee cap: In reversal, Biden signs order to keep Trump-era levels

WASHINGTON – In an abrupt reversal, President Joe Biden signed an emergency determination on Friday that will limit the number of refugees allowed to resettle in the United States to 15,000 – keeping a Trump-era cap in a move critics called a shameful betrayal. In February, Biden promised to lift the refugee cap to 62,500. But he changed course with little explanation, announcing the news on Friday through a senior administration official who said the White House needed to rebuild a broken U.S. resettlement program inherited from the Trump administration. Democrats and human rights groups blasted the about-face in blistering term.  Rep. Ilham Omar, D-Minn., called Biden s decision to keep the Trump-era cap shameful.
