Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) director general (DG) Elias Hausi has been fired and installed deputy DG Ireen Mlewa as acting head of the authority.

According to PPDA principal human resources officer Ellias Mwale, the acting DG Mlewa, who was suspended alongside Hausi on December 24 2020, had been retained in her position after being cleared of any wrongdoing and will also act as DG.
“On behalf of PPDA’s board of directors, I would like to inform you all that Mr Elias Hausi is no longer the director general of the authority and that the deputy director general will be acting director general until such a time when the position will be filed,” reads an internal memorandum by Mwale to staff dated March 11 2021.
Ombudsman Faults Appointment of Madalitso Mmeta As PPDA Chair
Dr. Chizuma: It was illegal
The Ombudsman Martha Chizuma has faulted the appointment of Madalitso Mmeta as Board Chairperson of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) describing it as illegal.
According to Chizuma, Madalitso Mmeta was appointed illegally and he knew about that but never recused himself.
Chizuma says Mmeta was caught in conflict of interest as he was also lawyer representing former President Peter Mutharika and that therefore he couldnt stop the payment of the South African lawyers as his wish was to help Mutharika win the case.

The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has challenged public procurement officers to exercise high levels of transparency and accountability by providing timely information to the public on any procurement issues in their respective institutions.

CHRR executive director Michael Kaiyatsa said this is critical in maintaining public trust and removing suspicions in the public tendering processes.
Kaiyatsa made the remarks when he opened a training for procurement officers from selected public institutions which was held last Friday.
