WAYNESBORO - An Augusta County Sheriff s Office deputy has been placed on leave after accidentally discharging his firearm following the arrest of a suspect early Sunday morning, according to a press release.
On Sunday, shortly after 1 a.m., a deputy attempted to stop a 2010 Audi SUV on Jefferson Highway near Lifecore Drive in Fishersville after the suspect s SUV was allegedly clocked at 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, the sheriff s office said.
The driver reportedly refused to stop. He proceeded onto Interstate 81 north before getting off the interstate at exit 225 and heading east toward Hermitage Road.
The Waynesboro Police Department was asked to assist with the pursuit and deployed a tire-deflation device as the SUV entered the city limits. Several tires on the SUV were deflated but the driver continued to elude law enforcement, the press release said.
