A former Congress MP has sought action against the chairman of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) for allegedly asking the people of Bengali-dominated Barak Valley to secede if unwilling to learn the Assamese language.
In a letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday, All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev said AHSEC chairman Dayananda Borgohain’s remark was unacceptable and discriminatory. She also forwarded a video of his “controversial” statement in a tweet tagging the Chief Minister.

GUWAHATI: Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that deputy commissioners (DCs) of districts with more than 100 COVID-19 positive cases have been asked to close schools from Class 1-5.
Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, Sarma said that Kamrup (M), Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Jorhat, Tinsukia and Cachar have 100+ COVID-19 positive cases. He said that the order for the closer of primary schools in these districts will be effective from Monday.

The fresh wave of COVID-19 has dampened the spirit of Rongali Bihu for the second consecutive year. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the State government for Bihu cultural evenings requires the Bihu committees to take prior permission and wind up the cultural programmes by 11 pm on the festival nights. Assam could not celebrate Rongali Bihu last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The mood for celebrations this year started building up after the health authorities allayed apprehensions of a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, especially during the peak of electioneering that witnessed large public gatherings without COVID-safety protocols.
