“I love this Club and this is where I want to be.”
The former Cessnock Goanna has put in the hard yards to fight his way into contention and become an integral part of Adam O’Brien’s team.
Jones was identified by the Knights at an early age after playing the majority of his football with his local club since under 10’s.
The strong ball-runner made his way through the pathway system, which included Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams, winning a Grand Final in the Under 16’s division.
Playing alongside lifelong friend Brayden Musgrove and other NRL players including Tom Starling and Hudson Young (both Canberra Raiders), the team went onto conquer all before them.
Kalyn Ponga hogged the headlines after leading Newcastle to a 38-0 shut-out of North Queensland in his comeback match at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night, and rightly so.
But it was the performance of another former Cowboy against his old club that left long-suffering Knights fans feeling excited about their team’s prospects in the final nine rounds of the season.
Five-eighth Jake Clifford showed touches of class with the ball, and desperation in defence, to suggest coach Adam O’Brien’s 18-month search for a fixture at No.6 might finally be over.
It was only Clifford’s fourth game for the Knights since leaving the Cowboys last month, and his first for Newcastle alongside his great mate Ponga, but O’Brien is convinced those two players plus half Mitchell Pearce and hooker Jayden Brailey will form a spine around which to build a successful team.
Mitchell Pearce confidently declared the NRL competition is ‘there for us’ after the Knights outclassed the Cowboys 38-0 in Kalyn Ponga’s first game in seven weeks.
Ponga scored two tries and had two try assists in a dominant return from a groin injury suffered in Round 9.
It is just the second time the Knights have won back-to-back games in 2021.
The big win over the Cowboys lifts the Knights from 13th to ninth on the NRL ladder with a bye and eight games remaining on their regular season schedule.
Asked on
Fox League if he believes the Knights can do some damage if they are able to avoid any more injuries to key players, Pearce replied: “Yeah I really do, me Cliff (Jake Clifford) and KP, as soon as Cliff came and while me and KP were injured we really sat down and went over a lot of video to work out what suits the team and what suits us.
