In 2019, 54% of the world’s population lived in a full-blown autocracy; 35% lived in democracies that were moving in the autocratic direction. This latter category included countries like Brazil, India, Poland, Ukraine, the Philippines, Turkey, and the United States. In just another year, by 2020, 68% of the world was living under authoritarianism, with V-Dem downgrading India—the world’s second most populous country—to an ‘electoral

Terms of engagement - Newspaper

The writer is a former ambassador to the US, UK & UN. NOW that a backchannel between Pakistan and India has been confirmed by a senior official it would be appropriate to evaluate its nature and implications. Efforts to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear neighbours are always welcome. But given the history of false starts and the one step forward, two steps backwards engagement in this long-troubled relationship it is important to take into account lessons of the past and on-ground realities, especially as the dire situation created by India in occupied Kashmir remains unchanged. There is nothing unusual about a backchannel. It is frequently used when formal dialogue between countries is suspended. This was often the case in the past when Pakistan and India demurred from engaging in open talks. Backchannels are useful to confidentially probe, explore and assess how much give there is in the other’s position. This is harder in a formal forum where negotiating parties stick to maximalist positions at least at the start. During the Musharraf period backchannel negotiations on the Kashmir dispute took place over three years to find an interim settlement. This marked the most serious effort in recent decades to find a political solution of Kashmir. The talks were conducted by civil servants who enjoyed the confidence of president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In his first Bengal rally, Rahul Gandhi attacks Mamata, BJP | India News

NEW DELHI: After avoiding campaigning in West Bengal so far, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked both BJP and Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in his first rally in the state. "BJP wants to destroy and divide Bengal, they are doing same thing in Assam and Tamil Nadu," said Rahul Gandhi at a rally in Goalpokhor. The former Congress president also mocked BJP's slogan of building "Sonar Bangla" and said the party "sells the same dream in every state". "In every state, they say similar things like Sonar Bangla. But, they only offer dividing people on the basis of religion, caste and language," the Congress leader said.

Why there is no stopping the BJP in India

On April 6, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked its forty-first Sthapana Divas (Foundation Day) with quiet online celebrations, both at the national and district levels. This was to be expected, given that the whole country is in the middle of a second Covid-19 wave, even more virulent than the earlier one. With the latest daily caseload of over 150,000, the figures are nothing short of alarming. The good news, however, is that over 100 million Indians have already been vaccinated and the fatality rates in this second surge are considerably lower, even if the new strains seem to be highly infectious and transmissible.
