Bold action plan revealed to rebuild Newton Rigg College
Plans to open a new Newton Rigg College in Cumbria have been revealed.
It is hoped the new independent college will start welcoming its first students in September 2025.
Behind the scheme is community organisation Newton Rigg Ltd, which has launched an urgent action plan to rebuild land-based education in the county.
Operators of the Newton Rigg campus, Askham Bryan, announced that it was pulling out of Cumbria and shutting the facility’s doors.
Its chief executive has been grilled by MPs over the decision and we have launched a petition to save land-based education in the county.

Defra is failing to address the future management of common land, two industry groups have warned
Defra has been warned that the UK s new Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme risks failing in its application to common land.
The Tenant Farmers Association (TFA) and the Foundation for Common Land (FCL) have today highlighted the importance of common land in England.
Over one fifth (21%) of England’s SSSI area is registered common land and 12% of all Scheduled Ancient Monuments are on common land.
This land, extending to around 400,000ha in England, is managed by around 3,900 active commoners with rights on this land in addition to the owners of that land.
THIS July, as things stand, Newton Rigg College will close its doors for the last time, bringing an end to 125 years of learning. Generations of farmers have cut their agricultural teeth on what has been described as the ‘Pride of Cumbria’. The county is the second largest producer of both red meat and milk in the country. It’s flagship seat of learning could soon disappear. The success of former students in farming and other business cannot be measured, but what can is the anger and sadness within the agricultural community over the decision, by its owner and education chiefs, to close the Penrith college for good.
