It has been three weeks, since we started phasing-in the reopening of schools for the year 2021. School Management Teams returned on 25 January; and teachers have been back at work for two weeks now, since 01 February.
The latest Amended School Calendar for 2021 as published by the Department, confirms that tomorrow – Monday, February 15, learners are going back to school. At the outset, we must emphasise that the health and safety of teachers, staff and learners remains at the top of the priority list.

NATIONAL NEWS - The Department of Basic Education has reiterated its commitment to finding a lasting solution to the challenge of non-payment of some general and education assistants employed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group are part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), aimed at addressing deficiencies in the basic education programme as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative formed part of the President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Employment Stimulus Programme. The basic education sector was set to create 100 000 general school assistant jobs and 200 000 education assistant opportunities.
In a statement, the department said it had embarked on urgent steps to assist provinces in arresting the delays experienced in the payment process.
Independent schools will open two weeks earlier

Johannesburg - The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that all public schools will officially open on February 15, with private schools allowed to reopen two weeks earlier.
This is according to a government gazette published on Friday, and comes after the Deputy Basic Education Minister Reginah Mhaule announced a delay in the reopening of schools for 2021.
“Independent schools must delay the date for the reopening of schools for learners to return to school for a period of two weeks from the date of the pronouncement of the minister, on January 15, 2021. Independent schools may not open earlier than the two-week period as contemplated [January 15],” reads the gazette.

The opening of schools was pushed forward by two weeks in light of Covid-19.

On Friday, the Department of Basic Education released a notice in the Government Gazette after Motshekga announced, on 15 January, that the opening would be pushed forward by two weeks in light of Covid-19.
