EU scientific committee ignores the science on vaping
Brussels / News Aktuell - The European Commission has today missed an opportunity to bolster its Beating Cancer Plan and recognise the importance of vaping in reducing smoking-related diseases among Europeans.
A report from the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) has failed to compare the risks of electronic cigarette use with the risks of smoking. Such an omission renders the report of little use to policy makers. An assessment of the impact e-cigarettes have had on European public health must be informed by this evidence.

Interview with Trillet-Lenoir
In February 2021, the European Commission presented its long-awaited flagship initiative – Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan – featuring four pillars: prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and quality of life of cancer patients.
The European Parliament gave a one year mandate to BECA Committee, a Special Committee on Beating Cancer, to work on its own draft Report. Askanews is hosting a series of interviews to hear straight from the BECA Members – what their priorities and commitments are and how their Report will fit in with the European Agenda.
I am Lorenzo Peiroleri editor at Askanews and I have the great pleasure to host this first interview with our guest Madame Véronique Trillet-Lenoir, a Member of the European Parliament’s Renew group and former oncologist. She is the Rapporteur for the BECA’s Report leading the discussions that will shape the draft of the final position of the European Parliament.
STOA delegation virtual visit to the Joint Research Centre
Scientific and technological advances lie at the heart of economic growth, and will be key to the economic recovery post-coronavirus. In line with their mission to support technological innovation, the legislators on the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) recently took part in a virtual visit to the Joint Research Centre (JRC) site at Ispra, Italy – Europe’s leading research campus with a wide range of laboratories and unique research infrastructures. The JRC’s operations at Ispra are geared to providing science-based responses to policy challenges with scientific, technological and socio-economic dimensions, with a number of their key research areas being of particular relevance and interest to STOA, including their research on the economics of climate change, on energy efficiency and transport, and on knowledge for growth.
