Trudeau says Ottawa withholding health-care transfers to N B over abortion access | iNFOnews

July 27, 2021 - 2:51 PM MONCTON, N.B. - New Brunswick is failing to live up to its obligations under the Canada Health Act because it continues to make it difficult for women to access abortions, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. As a consequence, the federal government is withholding health-care transfers to the province, Trudeau told reporters in Moncton, N.B. Making sure that every woman across this country has access to reliable reproductive services is extremely important to us, and that’s why we’ve continued … to impress strongly upon the government of New Brunswick how it needs to keep up its obligations under the Canada Health Act, Trudeau said.

Fredericton s Clinic 554 gets visit from Deputy PM, who pledges more pressure on province

FREDERICTON Six weeks after she crossed the floor, Fredericton member of parliament Jenica Atwin welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister on a tour of her riding – which began with a visit to Clinic 554. The family practice has been at the centre of a years-long battle on abortion access in New Brunswick. The clinic’s doctor, Adrian Edgar, has focused his practice on the LGBTQ population and reproductive healthcare. That includes abortions – a service not funded in N.B. if it happens outside a hospital. The service is covered by Medicare at three hospitals –the Moncton Hospital, Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital and the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst.

Parents of N B teen who died by suicide allowed access to some medical records under conditions

FREDERICTON After initially being told no, the parents of Lexi Daken say they were recently informed they can have access to some of their daughter s health records, but under conditions. The 16-year-old tried to see a psychiatrist at the Everett Chalmers emergency room in Fredericton on Feb. 18, according to her family. They say she was suicidal, having already attempted to take her own life a couple of months earlier. Despite waiting for over eight hours with her guidance counsellor, she never saw a psychiatrist, her family said. Instead, she was given a referral. Lexi died by suicide six days later.
