Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster Funds Deployment of Flexible Automation Solutions Next Generation Manufacturing Canada NGen consortium led by MDA commits over $11 million to build smarter, more resilient production systems. HAMILTON, Ontario, Feb. 18, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), the industry-led organization leading Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster, has co-funded a private sector consortium led by MDA that will enable the integration of artificial intelligence, industry 4.0, data sharing, and collaborative robotics into highly flexible, adaptable manufacturing environments. MDA along with partners Promark Electronics (Montreal, QC) and AV&R (Saint-Bruno, QC) seek to transform the Canadian manufacturing landscape by applying advanced manufacturing technologies into production environments where constant changes and the ability to maintain flexibility are essential competitive advantages.

NGen commits funding to new $72 million production facility that involves Canadian tech startups Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster, has committed to invest $16.8 million into a new protein production facility in Ontario aimed to address global food insecurity. “At $16.8 million in Supercluster funding, this project represents a high mark for NGen.” The project, which has a total commitment of $72.7 million, will bring together tech startups and other private businesses to employ various technologies that support non-meat protein production that is safe for the environment.   Several startups are bringing their technologies to this project, including Aspire Food Group, which is leading the project, as well as IoT startup Swift Labs and Darwin AI, both of which are based in Kitchener-Waterloo. Other partners on the project include Telus Agriculture and A&L Canada Laboratories.

The latest investments were made by Scale AI, the Oceans Supercluster, and the Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster. The Superclusters’ contributions have a combined value of approximately $17.6 million. “Each cohort of projects reflects the organizations’ needs in all sectors for concrete AI applications.” – Hélène Desmarais, Scale AI Quebec-based Scale AI, which invests in accelerates the rapid adoption and integration of artificial intelligence, is investing a total of $6.68 million into five projects. Although the projects vary in scope, with some focusing on transportation assets and others augmenting supply chain logistics, all projects involve the application of AI technology.
