USPS selects Oshkosh Defense for Next Generation Delivery Vehicle fleet

OSHKOSH, Wis. (February 23, 2021) The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced today that it has awarded Oshkosh Defense, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract to produce the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), the USPS’s first large-scale fleet procurement in three decades. The competitively awarded contract allows for the delivery of between 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over a period of 10 years.

After years of delay, the U.S. Postal Service has announced the new generation of delivery trucks after it awarded the modernization fleet contract to military contractor Oshkosh Defense. The Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), a prototype of which is shown in the gallery attached, is expected to make its appearance on routes in 2023, five years after the modernization plan should have been in full effect. Oshkosh is set to deliver up to 165,000 of them over the course of ten years.

The NGDVs that Oshkosh will build will include both battery-electric vehicles and low-emission internal-combustion-engine vehicles, both of which will be able to be retrofitted to keep up with the latest EV tech. They will also have air conditioning and airbags both of which the current trucks lack as well as heat, a 360-degree camera, a front and rear collision avoidance system, and automated emergency braking.
Oshkosh agreed to what is called an indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, meaning the USPS will be able to order more of the vehicles throughout the 10-year contract. During that time, the contract stipulates that the USPS will order anywhere between 50,000 and 165,000 of the vehicles.

USPS has chosen the manufacturer for its soon-releasing Electric Mail Truck, which would replace the current postal service delivery vans that are gas-powered with zero-emissions technology for the environment. The federal agency has been searching for the manufacturer of its electric trucks to change the way of deliveries and it has landed with Oshkosh Defense.

Oshkosh Defense is a known tactical vehicle manufacturer which provides heavy-duty equipment and vehicles for various parties.
