Pay increase for teachers priority over tuition grant
Even if no one imagined the circumstances under which a long-awaited teacher compensation report would be delivered, Indiana teachers knew its key finding: “Hoosier teachers earn less than teachers in all our neighboring states, and Indiana s $36,498 starting salary is more than $3,600 below the national average.”
It took the Next Level Teacher Compensation Commission nearly two years to acknowledge what some educators have argued for a decade. If the commission s recommendations look even more challenging in a post-COVID-19 economy, its report at least makes a powerful case for implementing them, acknowledging “the high cost of making up for a 20-year regression,” as well as the fact that “some of these recommendations will not be possible without significant additional funding.”

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb on Thursday unveiled his
Fighting the coronavirus pandemic is what Holcomb said is the biggest issues he wants to address.
“Managing through the surge and safely accelerating out of this pandemic will remain priority No. 1,” Holcomb said. “Our response and recovery efforts are all geared toward protecting lives and livelihoods.”
To keep that momentum, Holcomb wants to start a comprehensive assessment of state-delivered public health services and local health departments.
“This is just an honest assessment that ‘Hey, what are we learning through this crisis? What happens in the future? Because we don’t know and we want to be prepared for that. We want to make sure that in terms of communication, in terms of resources, in terms of nimbleness, ” the governor said.
Corona: Cut vouchers to pay teachers

The 37 ideas a state panel recommended for raising teacher pay did not include one approach that a Fort Wayne Community Schools board member would like lawmakers to consider.
“My suggestion, in addition to those 37 recommendations, is that the General Assembly looks at seriously cutting the amount of money they will budget for vouchers,” board member Steve Corona said. “If they re serious about raising teacher pay in public schools, this is the fund that they need to take a look at.”
Corona pitched his ideas during the board meeting Monday, hours after the Next Level Teacher Compensation Commission released a 183-page report with recommendations for short- and long-term approaches to increasing average teacher pay to at least $60,000 in Indiana.
