Building study: Bryant Hotel, New York, by David Chipperfield Architects
The purposefully tectonic 32-storey hotel and apartment block, The Bryant, is the practice’s first major project in New York City.

The Bryant is a new 32-storey tower on Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. It contains a 226-key hotel on the first 13 floors and 57 private residences above, with restaurants, retail and separate entrances at street level. Shared amenities include a terrace for use of residents, hotel guests and the public. Owing to its prominent location, the brief called for a respectful design that adhered to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission conditions. The façade relates to historic buildings nearby and sports a tectonic grid composition, lending the building a Classical appearance that asserts its identity.

The other morning I boarded a No. 2 train to check out a parking lot at the South Street Seaport Historic District.
Colonial Lane home built in 1946 earns landmark designation

A one-story, Colonial Revival style-home on the north side of Colonial Lane earned landmark designation last week in a unanimous vote of the Town Council.
The 2,000-square-foot home at 223 Colonial Lane, in the El Encanto subdivision in the North End, was designed and built in 1946 by architect Oliver T. Graham.
It is the first home on Colonial Lane to be landmarked, said Janet Murphy, a landmark consultant for the town. There are 21 houses on the street.
Town Council approval for the Colonial Lane home followed a unanimous recommendation from the Landmarks Preservation Commission last month to landmark the dwelling, which was purchased a month ago for $3.3 million by Thomas and Robyn Wasserman, according to county records.
On North Lake Way
The Glasers bought the North Lake Way house in 2017 for a recorded $5.6 million when it was ripe for renovation. With longtime ties to Miami Beach, the couple said at the time they were attracted to the house’s nautically influenced architecture, which includes porthole windows, a curvilinear silhouette and pipe railings.
With six bedrooms, the house has 6,040-square-feet on a lot with about 65 feet of lakefront and a dock, where the Glasers kept Sea Tabby, their vintage Trumpy yacht.
Agent Suzanne Frisbie of Premier Estate Properties acted on the Glasers’ behalf in the sale last week. Brown Harris Stevens agent Whitney McGurk confirmed he and colleague Liza Pulitzer handled the buyer’s side.
