Good morning, it’s Thursday, March 4, 2021. One year ago today, after receiving a morning briefing from the top health officials in the Trump administration, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an $8.3 billion bill to combat the new coronavirus sweeping the world. The morning briefing had done the trick: The vote was nearly unanimous. But as Americans would soon find out, the virus was already here.
That same day, March 4, 2020, California reported its first COVID death, although we now know that the first deaths in the state the first in the U.S. had occurred a month earlier in Santa Clara County. The first cluster was in Washington state, which reported six new deaths on March 4. News of first infections or new spikes came from all over: Malaysia, Japan, Brazil, Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, New York City and a cruise ship off the coast of San Francisco.

That represents about 12% of the state s adult population. But so far, teachers are not among them. Gov. Brian Kemp told 11 Alive News that the state simply doesn t have enough vaccine to open up the priority list to the state s 100,000-plus teachers.
Brian Kemp: Based on the data that we have, based on the public health guidance that I m getting from Dr. Toomey and other individuals, that we just do not have the supply to expand the criteria right now.

ATLANTA Georgia s health agency has suspended a medical provider from administering COVID-19 vaccinations after it allowed teachers to jump the line.
The Medical Center of Elberton will be suspended from the state Department of Public Health s coronavirus vaccine program for six months for inoculating Elbert County School District teachers who are not included in Georgia s Phase 1A+ eligibility group, state officials said.
Health department officials learned about the infraction on Tuesday, spokeswoman Nancy Nydam said in an email.

MIAMI (AP) Florida health authorities late Thursday reported finding evidence of the latest U.S. case of the new and apparently more contagious coronavirus strain first seen in England, saying it was detected in a man with no recent travel history.
The case, disclosed in a Florida Health Department statement tweeted on its HealthyFla site, comes after reports in recent days of multiple individual cases of the United Kingdom strain of COVID-19 discovered in Colorado and California.
