A New Jersey man spent 10 months trying to clear his name after facial recognition software wrongfully identified him as the suspect in a violent 2019 getaway.
Nijeer Parks spent at least eight days in jail and was never given a chance to explain that he was not in Woodbridge, New Jersey, the day a man nearly ran an officer over while trying to escape police custody at a hotel.
Parks had, in fact, never heard of the city and didn’t even own a driver’s license, according to court documents. He had proof to show he was at a Western Union in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey at the time of the encounter.

More than 700 criminal cases have been thrown out and local prosecutors say hundreds more may be tainted after corruption was recently exposed in the Baton Rouge Police Department Narcotics Division.
An officer at the center of the scandal has been arrested twice, four high-ranking narcotics officers have been reassigned to different divisions, and the department is leading a criminal investigation into the drug unit’s possible wrongdoing.
According to WBRZ, the Baton Rouge TV station that broke news of the brewing scandal, narcotics officers planted drugs, made stops without probable cause, and targeted random Black and brown people for trumped-up charges as part of an arrest quota mandated by the division’s supervisors.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made an unexpected decision late Thursday, announcing that she will not seek a second term.
Bottoms relayed the bombshell news in a video statement and letter entitled “Dear Atlanta.” She chronicled the hurdles and the triumphs of her administration through her first three-plus years at the city’s helm. Before releasing the statement, Bottoms told supporters and loved ones of her decision in a private phone call.

“As Derek and I have given thoughtful prayer and consideration to the season now before us, it is with deep emotions that I hold my head high, and choose not to seek another term as Mayor,” Bottoms said.
