COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Democratic National Committee is set to formally elect Jaime Harrison of South Carolina as chairman on Thursday, signifying an early alignment between newly inaugurated President Joe Biden and state party leaders around the country.

WASHINGTON - The Democratic National Committee elected Jaime Harrison of South Carolina as chair on Thursday, signifying an early alignment between newly inaugurated President Joe Biden and state party leaders around the country.
The party’s post-inauguration meeting, with election of a full slate of new officers, took place virtually, reflecting continued concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Vice chairs on the roster include Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela Jr. of Texas.

Though the
Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE Act) was passed by the House last December, it has languished on Mitch McConnell’s desk.
Harris was the lead Senate sponsor of the bill that would have removed cannabis from the federal government’s Schedule I controlled substance list, require federal courts to expunge prior non-violent marijuana convictions and funnel funds toward the communities most affected by the War on Drugs.

An Inauguration Day of ‘History and Hope’
Joe Biden is the 46th president; Kamala Harris is the 49th Vice President.
WASHINGTON D.C. On a crisp, cold day with occasional snow flurries and bursts of sunshine, Joe Biden was inaugurated the nation’s 46th president, calling the moment one of “history and hope.”
