Cruiser USS Vella Gulf Back on Deployment After Sea Trials, 2 Months of Repairs

A guided-missile cruiser that was sidelined for two months is back on deployment after a brief sea trial period to test repairs to several engineering casualties aboard the ship, U.S. 2nd Fleet officials told USNI News on Monday.

Vella Gulf (CG-72) left Naval Station Norfolk, Va., last week after being pier-side for repairs since late February – initially for fuel tank leaks and then for the lube oil system of the cruiser’s main reduction gear.
Shipyard subcontractor killed while working on USS McFaul

NORFOLK, Va. A woman working on board USS McFaul (DDG-74) at a Norfolk shipyard was killed Monday morning, the Navy confirms.
It happened as the McFaul is undergoing maintenance at the NASSCO-Norfolk shipyard. The woman has not been publicly identified at this time, but the Navy said she worked as a subcontractor at the shipyard.
The circumstances surrounding her death have also not been released.

March 5 (UPI) The destroyer USS Forrest Sherman will return to the sea, on schedule, following trials after six months of repairs, the Navy announced on Friday.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer underwent a Scheduled Restricted Availability, repairs and selected alterations required to sustain the ship s condition between overhauls.

The ship received repairs to major hull, mechanical, and engineering systems, including to two gas turbine generators, the flight deck, attachment points known as sliding padeyes and other upgrades, the U.S. Naval Seas Systems Command reported on Friday.
