We wanted to share some white sharks that share the name of some Star Wars characters,” the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy wrote in a tweet. The conservancy, a nonprofit that seeks to bolster scientific research and track shark sightings, posted images of the great whites that have swum near the Bay State alongside the message about National Star Wars Day, otherwise known as “May the 4th.”

The new online tool, called the “White Shark Logbook,” helps people see the historical detection data for tagged white sharks along Cape Cod. The White Shark Logbook provides users with data from 2010 to 2020, while the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app is for real-time sighting and detection data. The new logbook that includes information on 208 individual sharks and 583,092 overall detections gives a breakdown of where the great white sharks have been in Cape waters by month and by year. People can also learn some biographical information about each shark.

The first basking shark of the season was spotted this year off the coast of Cape Cod. The underwater creature, the second-largest living fish, was seen yards away from Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, a nonprofit that supports scientific research and tracks shark sightings. The AWSC shared a video credited to Craig Marcotte of the large shark swimming in the waters close to the beach. Its lengthy, dark fins were seen by several beachgoers, one of whom can be heard swearing in the video.
