Patty Mills is one of the finest basketballers this country has produced but he means so much more to our country and national sporting landscape.
This will be Mills’ fourth Olympics and he has long been a leader in the Australian Boomers’ pursuit of an elusive Olympic medal, the side having four times fallen short in the bronze play-off, including by one point to Spain at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Who is he?
Mills, 32, plays with the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association. He is a championship-winning shooting guard who provides high energy at both ends of the floor. He had a rocky start, having been dubbed “fatty Patty” by coach Gregg Popovich because of his body fat percentage when he initially joined the Spurs after a stint with the Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League in 2011.
