The University of Iowa has distributed over $8 million from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund its students, according to an email from the school’s Office of Financial Aid.
The Daily Iowan reports that 6500 students received an average of about $1200. An e-mail to the campus community indicated that the number is about 1800 more students than those that received aid last summer through the CARES Act.
The breakdown includes 82 percent of the funding to undergraduates, 10 percent to professional students, and the remaining 8 percent to graduate students.
The University said nearly 40 percent of the recipients were first-generation students.
The DI says in total, nearly $82 billion was approved for disbursal by Congress in the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II. That includes aid to students and the schools themselves.
