PU researchers convert agri waste into edible sugars

LAHORE:A research team under Punjab University Centre for Research in Ionic Liquids (CRIL) Director Dr Maliha Uroos has developed a protocol to convert agricultural waste into food.
The food grade glucose produced can be used for human consumption, in pharmaceuticals, general food industry and for the production of artificial proteins. The CRIL has been recently established by PU VC Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Akhtar with an aim to resolve socio-economic problems.
The work is published in international journal of American Chemical Society named “ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering” with an impact factor of 7.63. This research contribution was made possible by her PhD student Azmat Mehmood Asim, in collaboration with Prof Jason Hallett, Imperial College London and Dr Nawshad Muhammad, Khyber Medical University.

SWABI: The Women University Swabi has Tuesday announced the removal of its Vice-Chancellor, on the instructions of Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), after an inquiry confirmed financial discrepancies and unjust postings played out in her tenure, ARY News reported.
Governor KP Shah Farman ordered an inquiry into the financial anomalies in the university accounts and postings of people outside of legal protocol which apparently found the allegations to hold water.
The governor-commissioned inspection team found the allegations to be true following which the report was sent to the governor’s office and as a result, he instructed 90-day forced leaves of the incumbent VC.

VCs write to CM, federal finance minister, seeking budget increase

For the first time, vice chancellors of Sindh s public varsities have joined forces to pinpoint the massive financial crisis faced by their institutions.
In separate letters to Federal Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, they outline budget deductions over the last two fiscal years. The VCs highlight rising expenditures and demand an immediate increase to maintain/run the varsities.
Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood is addressed in the letter sent to Tareen. A copy has also been dispatched to the Higher Education Commission in Islamabad, the federal finance secretary and the federal HEC secretary. In addition, a copy has also been sent to Sindh Higher Education Commission Chairperson Dr Asim Hussain, additional chief secretary, universities, their boards, and the provincial finance secretary.
