Roundup: Hatchets, Bearcats softball split doubleheader; Warriors sweep Caseville FacebookTwitterEmail Bad Axe, Ubly softball split BAD AXE – The Bad Axe and Ubly softball teams split a doubleheader on Thursday, with the Bearcats taking Game 1 and the Hatchets bouncing back to win Game 2. Bad Axe came got off to a slow start in Game 1, garnering only three hits in a 8-3 loss. Hits were from Sydney Prill with 2 RBIs, Haley Newland with an RBI, and Brooke Messing added a double. Newland took the loss on the mound, with Maddy Haldane pitching well in relief. Game 2 saw the Bad Axe bats come alive for a 10-1 victory. Leading the offense was Newland (2 for 3, HR, 3 RBIs), Messing (HR), Amber Haldane (2 RBIs), and Destiny Booms (2 RBIs).  Newland got the victory on the mound, giving up eight hits and one earned run while striking out two..

The Rockets edged the Hatchets, 82-80, and placed themselves in the driver s seat in the Greater Thumb West. Pictured above is Bad Axe s top scorer, junior Aaron Sowles.Mark Birdsall/Huron Daily Tribune REESE – The Bad Axe boys basketball team traveled to Reese on Monday night for what would prove to be the prep hoops equivalent of a heavyweight bout – a good one. The game, which matched up two talented, evenly matched teams fighting for supremacy in the Greater Thumb Conference West, featured several lead changes, a tie score at the end of regulation, a final decisive possession and a young Hatchets lineup that showed the poise of a much more experienced squad. Unfortunately for Bad Axe, the Rockets would prevail, 82-80, in overtime.

Girls hoops roundup: Hatchets, Pirates win FacebookTwitterEmail Harbor Beach 48, Capac 7 HARBOR BEACH The Harbor Beach girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon with 48-7 victory over Capac. Leading the way for the Pirates (1-1) were Maya Pfaff with 13 points, Mariah Jahn and Josie Kozfkay with 7 points each, Maddie Geiger and Paige Anderson with 6 points each, Brenna Bischer with 5 and Leandra Wolschlager with 4. Pirates head coach Jim Tamlyn said the condensed season has started with a hectic pace that won’t let up until the season is over and his team is dealing with a short bench, but he and his players are happy to be back playing and they are looking forward to their matchup with Ubly on Monday night. He has two new varsity players in Bischer and freshman Jahn, and he was pleased with how the Pirates played as team on Saturday.
