TTMA: We ll do our part against covid19

Photo by Vidya Thurab THE Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) on Tuesday promised the population it will continue to play its part to assist the national covid19 response, particularly during the current state of emergency (SoE). The SoE took effect from midnight last Saturday. In response to questions from Newsday, the TTMA said in a statement, The manufacturing sector is focusing on managing its best given the current SoE in the country and the present covid19 regulations. While it understood and appreciated the Government s need to preserve life owing to the recent, significant surge in the number of covid positive cases and deaths, the TTMA said, We are cautious given the impact for the last year on the manufacturing industry. We are confident that due focus is being given to the preservation of livelihood by the Government.

The Prime Minister announced the decision on Saturday afternoon and it was subsequently proclaimed by President Paula-Mae Weekes hours later. It will include a daily curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. President of the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce Kiran Singh told Newsday the Government had no choice given the rapidly increasing number of covid19 cases.

But he said this country’s already suffering economy is going to “get even worse over the next three weeks.” On Thursday afternoon, Dr Rowley announced the closure of all restaurants and bars, malls, places of worship, gyms and fitness centres, spas, salons and barbershops, casinos and betting houses, as well as cinemas, theatres and clubs. These restrictions will remain in effect until May 23. As of 4 pm on Thursday, there were 1,913 active cases of covid19 – 328 of which were recorded between Monday and Wednesday. To date 165 people have died from the virus.
