They will be in place till 4 a.m on May 20. As part of the new restrictions, government and private offices will be allowed to function only with 50% employees, public transport including passenger trains and buses, metro trains and taxis will operate at 50% of their capacity. Only non air-conditioned provision and grocery stores will be allowed to function till noon and only 50% customers can get into these shops. Restaurants and hotels are allowed to sell food through parcels. Tea shops can be open till noon. Markets and meat shops can function only on weekdays between 6 a.m. and noon. They will be shut on Saturdays and Sundays.

Prakash on Saturday said that vaccination has restrained Covid cases among the frontline workers across the city. The Commissioner said in a statement that this is a strong case as to why people should take the Covid vaccine jabs. Out of the 60,000 to 70,000 frontline workers in the city including the GCC employees, health care staff and police, only 619 were infected with the pandemic as 90 per cent of them were vaccinated.

If people who test positive for COVID-19 are in case asymptomatic, they should avoid rushing immediately to big hospitals, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner, G Prakash appealed to the public here on Friday. When all positive people with no symptoms crowded big state-run facilities, it became hard for doctors to pay complete attention to patients who are in serious condition battling severe symptoms, he said. Doctors were left with no time to concentrate on those who are serious and crowding deprived immediate, quality medical care to those who needed it the most, he said. Hence, immediately rushing to large hospitals should be avoided, he told reporters here.

Order to exhume COVID-19 victim s body stayed

‘Corporation is busy tackling the second wave’ A Division Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday stayed the operation of an order passed by a single judge of the court on March 31, directing the Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner to exhume the body of a neurosurgeon who died in April 2020 after testing positive for COVID-19, from a cemetery at Velangadu, near New Avadi Road here, and re-bury it at a Christian cemetery in Kilpauk. Justices M.M. Sundresh and R.N. Manjula granted the interim stay after Additional Advocate General (AAG) P.H. Arvindh Pandian pointed out that the Corporation was busy tackling the second wave of COVID-19 and the situation was not conducive to exhuming the body of a COVID-19 victim. Appearing on behalf of the Corporation Commissioner, the AAG said an expert committee had opined against exhuming the body.
