Green fund cash set to restore parts of Bolton s famous river

The River Croal THE banks of a Bolton river are to be restored and natural flood defences bolstered as part of a £1.8M ‘green recovery’ project. The River Croal is one of the priority projects for the Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF) that will establish a network for nature across the region. The establishment of the fund is also good news for people working in the environment and young people looking for green careers as 37 jobs will be created or safeguarded, including 12 traineeships. The Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF) is being established to deliver the area’s ambition for a ‘clean, carbon-neutral, climate resilient city region with a thriving natural environment’,  by aligning public and philanthropic funding and attracting private investment.

Councils demand more powers as they commit to net zero by 2030

Click the thumbs up >Regional leaders from 41 local auhtorites have committed to cutting council emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2030, and emissions from their communities by 2045. However, the cross-party group is calling on the Government to give local authorities more powers, if the ambitious target is to be achieved. The Greater London Authority, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Liverpool City Council, Newcastle City Council, Sheffield City Region and West Midlands Combined Authority are among those that have made the new pledge, which has been co-ordinated by UK100. The authorities represent more than 20 million people, almost a third of the UK’s population, including all tiers of local government, all regions in England, and Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland.

Planned merger of Bolton s North and Central fire stations paused

THE planned merger of Bolton’s North and Central fire stations remains “paused” as the fire service is subject to a public sector pay freeze. Authorities had intended to combine the two fire stations to create just one facility, but these plans were put on hold following the Cube fire. Fire Brigade Union secretary for Greater Manchester Steve Wiswell said: “The situation that the fire service has been in has been absolutely woeful. “It used to be a service that we could take pride in now it’s been absolutely decimated. “We used to have up to 15 fire fighters based at each station, now there’s usually four on duty.
