Montreal saw biggest rent increases in 18 years in 2020, study finds
Rents in Montreal, and the surrounding area, jumped by more than four per cent between 2019 and 2020, the highest annual increase in nearly two decades, according to a new report.

MONTREAL In a potential post-COVID-19 pandemic world, it seems more Quebecers are looking to enjoy the quiet country life, rather than bask in the busy hustle and bustle of city living. This is the result of the most recent RE/MAX Real Estate Index, a regional semi-annual survey that analyzes the current real estate market, including whether Quebecers are looking to buy or sell their homes, and where they plan to go. According to the survey, when asked where their ideal future home would be, one in three Quebecers responded the country, a dramatic jump from spring 2020, when it was one in five.

The latest COVID-19 projections from Quebec’s public health institute (INSPQ) show optimistic scenarios for the Greater Montreal Area, but indicate the regions will remain unstable for a little while longer, even with emergency measures in place.
The optimism shown in Thursday’s projections, when compared with previous ones, relies heavily on the vaccine rollout in Quebec.

“The main difference, which was a game-changer in terms of our projections, was the announcement that there would be more than one million additional doses in May and June,” said Marc Brisson, a professor at Université Laval who works with the INSPQ and presented the projections on Thursday.
