GLOVERSVILLE & MONTGOMERY COUNTY – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced a $300,000 Brownfields Program assessment grant for properties in Fulton County and an $800,000 multipurpose grant for the Greater Mohawk Valley Land Bank.
The grants are part of $66.5 million worth of EPA grants awarded to 151 communities nationwide for the purpose of assessing and cleaning up contaminated properties under the EPA’s Brownfields Program.
The Mohawk Valley and the Capital Region received a total of $2.8 million worth of Brownsfield Program grants Wednesday, with the largest grant, $800,000, going to the Greater Mohawk Valley Land Bank targeting a 20-mile stretch of land along the Erie Canal Corridor that includes the villages of Canajoharie and Fort Plain and the city of Little Falls. 3:26 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced millions of dollars in grants to address contaminated brownfields. As WAMC’s Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports, some of the grants are for projects in upstate New York.
The EPA recently announced $66.5 million in grants to address brownfields, and during a press conference Wednesday, some of those projects in the Mohawk Valley and Capital Region were highlighted.
Walter Mugdan is the acting Regional Administrator for EPA Region 2. He says since 1995, the Brownfields Program has brought economic revival to “forgotten and struggling communities.”
“Nationwide, communities participating in the Brownfields Program have been able to attract more than $34.4 billion in cleanup and redevelopment funding after receiving Brownfields funds. And this has led to over 175,000 jobs in cleanup, construction, and redevelopment,” said Mugdan.
Many of the communities do not have enough money or resources needed to research and mitigate potential brownfield sites.
Mugdan said the $8000,000 is slated for updating brownfield inventory, 15 site assessments, cleanup at five properties and developing six reuse plans. The money also will help a vacant mixed-use apartment complex in Little Falls.
“This is going to be a huge shot in the arm for many communities dealing with old tanneries, old mills, old factories that they just don’t have the money to start to deal with,” Morawksi said.
Mugdan said the $300,000 to Mohawk Valley EDGE will cover site inventory, 14 site assessments and help develop three reuse plans. The money also will help at a three-story housing unit in Utica, Rome’s eastern section and Little Italy neighborhoods and a former gas station in Sherrill.
