VICTORIA The Greater Victoria School District is warning families of a potential COVID-19 exposure at a Saanich middle school. The exposure took place on April 1 at Arbutus Global Middle School, located at 2306 Edgelow St. The school district says that Island Health is in the final stages of contact tracing. If you have not been contacted by public health, then please be assured that your child did not have a high-risk exposure, and they should continue to attend school as long as they are not experiencing any symptoms, reads the Island Health website. Arbutus Global marks the 10th school on Vancouver Island where a COVID-19 exposure has been reported within the last two weeks.
Manager Jeffrey Baergen said the program has been in the works for four years, but the process was speeded up when overdose deaths began rising. The program has room to grow, he said. Adult men are in the program for six months, and can then move to second- and third-stage housing. “So they can actually stay here for up to two years,” Baergen said. He said the Salvation Army believes in recovery first, rather than housing first. “Unhealthy people simply cannot sustain housing,” he said. “Until we prioritize health over housing, the cycle of homelessness will never end. “Recovery is a piece of a very complex continuum that aims to end that cycle.”
VICTORIA The Greater Victoria School District says there has been a COVID-19 exposure at Oak Bay High School. The exposure occurred on Tuesday, one day after students across the province returned to class from spring break. Island Health sent notice to parents and guardians about the exposure. The school district says health authorities are conducting contact tracing to determine who else might have contracted the virus at the school. Anyone who may have been exposed to the virus at Oak Bay High will be contacted directly by Island Health officials. Anyone who is not contacted should continue to attend classes as usual.
