Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Standing Committee on Friday rolled back its decision to gift its members brand new Apple iPhones amid a financial crunch after receiving backlash.
This came at a time when all 17 members of the Standing Committee, which is the final authority to approve the development projects of the Corporation, will demit office in the first week of February 2021. The proposal to buy the new iPhone 12 Pro Max (512GB) was among the 14 proposals that were listed on the agenda on Thursday.

The merger will be good news for the people of the Cantonment Board.
Hyderabad: The much awaited merger of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will have wait for a while longer.
The meeting in the SCB that was expected to see elected representatives give their approval to merge with the GHMC was not conducted on Thursday.
“We are awaiting orders from the ministry of defence (MoD). Once the orders are issued, it would go to the Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE) and other departments. It is only after their approval that we can take the matter forward and give our opinion,” said J. Maheshwar Reddy, elected representative of the SCB.
Telangana logs 509 new COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths

Hyderabad: Telangana reported 509 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to over 2.79 lakh while three fatalities pushed the toll to 1,505, the state government said on Thursday.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 104, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (45) and Rangareddy (42), it said in a bulletin, providing details as of 8 PM on December 16.
As many as7,172 patients are under treatment and48,652 samples were tested on Wednesday.
Cumulatively, over 63 lakh samples have been tested.
The samples tested per million population was over 1.69 lakh, the bulletin said.

People advised not to neglect COVID precautions
The threat of surge in COVID-19 cases because of mass gatherings in the run up to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections and on the day of polling seems to be over.
It has been 16 days since the local body elections were held on December 1, and 13 days since the results were announced on December 4, but the decline in cases continues.
On December 2, a day after the elections were held, senior officials of the Health department had urged elected representatives, political leaders and party cadre who participated in campaigning and polling, to isolate themselves for a week to contain possible spread of coronavirus.
