Like many of you, on January 20, 2021, I took a very long exhale as I watched President Biden and VP Kamala Harris being sworn into office. I think the weight of four years of stress came out in that long exhale, and I felt a resurgence of hope seeing the flurry of executive orders come in that same day, many of which were eco-focused. But of course, executive orders are only a step in the right direction, and we have much work to do if we are to meet the targets laid out in the Paris Climate Accord. Thankfully, in tandem with national policy, Maine has also been making progress in the fight against climate change, thanks in large part to the work of our Maine Climate Council.

AUGUSTA A 2-acre park hidden away in the heart of busy and heavily developed north Augusta, is getting spruced up by a combination of volunteers, businesses and the city.
Maintenance of Kennebec Valley Garden Club Park, created in the mid-1970s at the urging of the late philanthropist Elsie Viles, had fallen off in recent years. Many members of the regional garden club who took care of it previously grew older or busy with other projects to maintain the park that surrounds a 1-acre pond at the site between Civic Center Drive, University Drive and Commun

Bettyann Sheats
AUGUSTA The Finance Authority of Maine recently welcomed Bettyann Sheats of Auburn to its board of directors.
She was nominated by Gov. Janet Mills in late January and confirmed by the Legislature in late February.
Sheats owns a small specialty construction business. She previously served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives, where she served on the Transportation Committee. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where she majored in aeronautical engineering, Sheats served her nation in the United States Army, where she achieved the rank of captain and served as a helicopter pilot.

Local school districts are making a final push for families to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid applications before the Maine State Grant deadline of May 1. Families can apply after May 1, but will not be eligible for the grant, which provides up to $1,500 in need-based aid.
