A look at big settlements in US police killings

A look at big settlements in US police killings by The Associated Press Last Updated May 14, 2021 at 4:44 pm EDT COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The family of Andre Hill, a Black man who was fatally shot by a white Ohio police officer in December, will receive a $10 million settlement from the city of Columbus. Hill, 47, was fatally shot by officer Adam Coy on Dec. 22 as Hill emerged from a garage holding up a cellphone. Coy was fired and has pleaded not guilty to murder and reckless homicide charges. Some settlements in police killings are kept private. Often a settlement includes money but specifies there was no admission of guilt. Some such lawsuits end up in court where a jury can award massive settlements that are reduced on appeal.

The officer was placed on administrative duties for 30 days immediately after the shooting in accordance with Chicago Police Department protocol. When asked about COPA s recommendation at a news conference following the video release on Wednesday, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said, I have not heard that from COPA. The tactical response report COPA released along with the video and other materials identified the officer who fired the shots as Evan Solano, a 29-year-old member of the department since June 2015 who is assigned to the 16th District on the Northwest Side.

Granderson: The guilty verdict in the Chauvin trial won’t be enough for real progress By LZ Granderson Share: Would Derek Chauvin, the former police officer, be on the streets today without the video? The answer to that question not the jury’s verdict is the true indicator of how much progress has been made since George Floyd’s death. Chauvin being found guilty on all three charges of murder and manslaughter is a relief. But relief won’t bring Floyd back. And that’s why even a guilty verdict was never going to be sufficient. The goal has to be preventing the next George Floyd from happening.
