ATHOL It looks like the new mascot for sports teams in the Athol Royalston Regional School District will be a powerful, ferocious, fearsome animal, a clever, resourceful and intimidating bird, or a medieval symbol of chivalry, honor and bravery.
School Committee student representative Logan Warnham provided an update at Wednesday’s committee meeting on the initiative to replace the former Red Raider mascot, represented by a cartoonish depiction of a Native American with something that is not racially and culturally offensive.

Maureen Ronayne thought 2020 would be the year when, at long last, her 10-year-old son Daniel would learn to read at grade level. She and her husband had spent six years fighting to get Daniel, who is dyslexic, the supports he needed from the Medford public schools. In November, members of the Athol Royalston Regional School Committee voted to retire its “Red Raiders” moniker, name and mascot. The “Red Raider” logo depicted a tomahawk-wielding cartoon figure with a big nose and spear over his shoulder.
The move away from racist depictions of Native Americans follows those at Frontier Regional School, Turners Falls High School and Mohawk Trail Regional School, as well as the Washington Redskins renaming themselves – temporarily – the Washington Football Team – and this week’s announcement that ownership of the Cleveland Indians will rename that baseball team
