The first in-depth study of representation in Netflix s movies and programs showed that the world s biggest streaming service is helping to diversify Hollywood but still has progress to make, particularly behind the camera. Conducted by Stacy L. Smith of the University of Southern California, the report found that Netflix is ahead of its peers while still lagging in many areas. The company has a lot of work to do in creating opportunities for women and people of color behind the camera, as well as people with disabilities or those who identify as LGBTQ on screen.

Listen to the audio version BELOW. When we launched our first TV shows in 2013 like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, we aspired to tell stories that weren’t available elsewhere. Not only in terms of the variety we offered, but also the people and cultures we brought to the screen. As we expanded into films and documentaries, we continued to push boundaries - celebrating firsts with talent from traditionally underrepresented communities like Laverne Cox, Rachel Morrison, Yance Ford, and Dee Rees. Stories like Dear White People, When They See Us, Atypical, Master of None and Nanette resonated with audiences who rarely saw themselves on screen. We thought we were making progress… but were we really, and was it enough?
