Court overturns Assumption shooter s drug and weapons convictions

Court overturns Assumption shooter’s drug and weapons convictions A court has overturned drug and weapons convictions for a Belle Rose man convicted in a shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured three years ago.  An Assumption Parish jury found Kirby Thomas, 42, guilty in 2018 of attempted manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance.  After a judge sentenced Thomas to 20 years in prison on the attempted manslaughter charge, 10 years on the weapons charge and five years on the drug charge, Thomas appealed to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal in Baton Rouge.
