Guwahati, March 16 : As the hectic campaigning for the three-phase assembly elections in Assam gains momentum, the All Assam Students Union (AASU), an influential student body, has asked the political parties to clear their stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
The AASU would organise bike rallies on March 20 across Assam to press for its demand to repeal the CAA and create awareness among the people against the forces that support the contentious law.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address an election rally in Chabua in Dibrugarh district on March 20. It will be the first campaign rally of the Prime Minister in Assam after the declaration of Assembly elections in five states/UT on February 26.

For the last 15 months, Mousumi Stafford has been fighting for justice for her brother. Now, sheâs keenly following the political developments ahead of the Assembly election in Assam, scheduled for between March 27 and April 6. For Mousumi, this election will prove to be decisive.
On December 12, 2019, Sam Stafford, 17, died in police firing during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Guwahati. The law, passed in the parliament the day before, gives citizenship to undocumented, non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Assam erupted in violent protests as many saw the law as a violation of the 1985 Assam Accord, which committed the central government to removing all âillegal immigrantsâ who entered the state after March 24, 1971.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is perceived as a distinct ideological formation helmed by a strong leader and backed by the largest cadre organisation in the world. The upcoming Assembly elections in four states, however, reveal another important facet of the BJP’s strategy in its attempt to expand its footprint in the states. The party is open to poaching members of other political parties in regions where it does not have a structural set-up. Should the party perform well in those regions, the newcomers will certainly have clout, but the jury is still out on whether the new entrants ultimately change the BJP or the party transforms them.
