BANGKOK: Women’s badminton world number one Tai Tzu-ying breezed into the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open on Thursday, sweeping aside South Korea’s Kim Ga-eun 21-16, 21-10 in less than half an hour.
The 26-year-old’s victory came as the Badminton World Federation declared the tournament safe to continue following the latest round of Covid-19 testing
“It has been a while since the last tournament, and this is the same for everyone, so (these first few matches) are not easy,” admitted Tai after overcoming the 17th-ranked Kim.

In a 3rd and last mandatory round of Covid-19 tests ahead of the tournament, Saina Nehwal tested positive and was asked to isolate in a hospital for a minimum of 10 days by the organisers. The 30-year-old has been withdrawn from the tournament.
Earlier, BWF had said that Indian men s world number 28 HS Prannoy also tested positive for Covid-19. However, the association later clarified that he has tested negative. Further, Saina Nehwal s husband and men s world number 24 Parupalli Kashyap has also been asked to self-quarantine as he shares the room with his wife.

The Badminton World Federation said the four positive tests had been re-examined, and Nehwal was receiving medical treatment at a Bangkok hospital.
