High turnout in West Bengal, Assam second phase Assembly polls

Kolkata / New Delhi: West Bengal saw over 80 per cent polling in the second phase of assembly polls in the state. Addressing a press conference here, state Chief Electoral officer Aariz Aftab said that the polling was peaceful apart from a few stray incidents. The turnout was 80.43 per cent polling till 5 pm, he said. The second phase of polling was held on 30 seats in West Bengal. Nandigram, where the high-profile contest is between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her former ministerial colleague and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhkari, also went to the polls in this phase. The percentage will increase a bit after the final compilation of reports from all the returning officers, election officials said, adding that no incident of violence was reported so far from the 13 districts where the voting was peacefully.

The Rangia constituency in the state has witnessed the highest voting percentage with a voter turnout of 35.58 per cent till 11.18 am, while the Lumding constituency witnessed the lowest voting percentage with a voter turnout of just 8.67 per cent each.
