New plans in process for our forests and our extensive coastal waters

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue T.D. and the Minister of State Senator Pippa Hackett have announced Project Woodland , an initiative to tackle issues in forestry in Ireland and drive forward the planting of trees. The Ministers accepted a report on reforming the Irish Forestry Licensing system and committed to its immediate implementation. Welcoming the announcement, Minister Charlie McConalogue stated, I am delighted to help launch the new strategy for our forestry sector and I give my support to Project Woodland. The new initiative is aimed at solving many of the issues which has mired the forestry sector in recent times .

Dublin City Council recognised for work on biodiversity

A recent publication by the National Biodiversity Data Centre, ‘ Working together for Biodiversity, Tales from the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020’ noted the achievements by Dublin City Council to promote pollinators over the past five years on Dublin’s north side. Through Artane, Donaghmede, Donnycarney, Finglas Village, Cabra, Ballymun and Santry, there have been several initiatives involving the planting of over 10,000 square metres of spring bulbs, 5,000 square metres of wildflowers, 350 square metres of wildflower turf and 130 square metres of bee and butterfly bulb mixes. Over 60 flowering trees have also been planted in Artane, Donaghmede and Glasnevin. Parks staff have also worked with community groups in the north inner city to distribute bulbs, wildflower seeds and advice to enable residents to improve the area for biodiversity
