The government is considering bringing forward the doses for the over-50s and people with underlying conditions in areas badly affected by the strain.
This could very quickly amount to millions of people, with cases of the variant having more than doubled in the last week, with prevalence highest in the North West and London.
The government on Thursday night published an action plan to battle the variant, which experts fear is 30% more transmissible than the Kent strain that plunged the UK into fresh lockdowns in December.
