WASHINGTON: “In a more complex world, the one principle of war we need to remember is simplicity,” Gen. Paul Funk told the AFCEA TechNet August conference this morning. “Our job is to take incredibly complex skills or environments and simplify ’em and bring them into a task list that a squad leader and his squad can execute on any corner in the world.”
As chief of Training & Doctrine Command Funk has to help commanders and instructors at every level prepare for the complexity of information-age All-Domain Operations without being overwhelmed by it. That philosophy, he told TechNet, is driving TRADOC’s embrace of three major initiatives.

WASHINGTON: The Joint Staff and DoD’s Chief Data Office David Spirk have agreed to lead a new process to set data standards for all future military sensors and weapons to connect at machine speed the foundation for success in All Domain Operations, leaders of the J6 say.
“I believe all of us have come to understand for JADC2 to truly function as a joint warfighting capability, we’ve got to have the data foundation. And so, this is a critical first step,” said Army Brig. Gen. Rob Parker, JG deputy director and head of the JADC2 Joint Cross-Functional Team (CFT). The J6 leads the Joint Staff’s work on Command, Control, Communications, & Computers/Cyber.
This is a change in the way that the JROC has historically worked, Stuart Whitehead, J6 deputy director for cyber and C4 integration says. In order for JADC2 to work, requirements particularly at the enterprise level have to be understood and documented in a way that so that we can describe our requirements to our acquisition counterparts in a more specific way than maybe what we had done previously.

The Army’s TITAN ground station will link ISR sensors based in space, on land and in the air.
WASHINGTON: A shift in Army and Navy space resources i.e., capabilities and funds to the Space Force is not likely to appear in the DoD budget request until 2023, says Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond.
“Those decisions are being finalized now. The FY-22 budget has largely been baked, so I would say that this will be addressed in the next budget,” he told reporters at a Defense Writers Group briefing this am.

WASHINGTON: Air Mobility Command (AMC) is reviewing how many off-the-shelf tankers it will need to buy to “bridge” capabilities provided by the KC-46 fleet once its fully operational and the development of a follow-on tanker, says commander Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost. The Air Force hopes to have figured out a concept for that next-generation aerial refueling aircraft some time in 2022, she said.
The KC-46 is expected to be fully operational that is, able to take on the gamut of missions from medical airlift through aerial refueling in fiscal year 2024, Van Ovost told the Defense Writers Group today.
