Chicago s vaccine rollout to expand April 19

Lori Lightfoot All Chicago adults will be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine by April 19, the new deadline set by the Biden administration, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said during a press briefing today. While Lightfoot encouraged people to sign up for a shot as soon as they’re eligible, she noted that it may be a few weeks before appointments become available with vaccines in short supply.  Earlier The city previously estimated that Phase 2 of its vaccine rollout (which includes all residents 16 and older) would start on May 1. “As long as we have vaccine supply, we’re 100 percent in support of moving ahead,” Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said during the briefing.

After receiving additional guidance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, local and state officials have changed eligibility requirements for appointments at the United Center’s mass vaccination site, limiting appointments to Chicago and Cook County residents only. According to an email sent by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office on Sunday, eligibility for appointments will indeed expand to residents age 18 or older with pre-existing health conditions and comorbidities, but appointments will only be available to Chicago residents after 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
