Consumer Price Index, Seattle area February 2021 03/10/2021 | 12:04pm EDT Send by mail : Message : Wednesday, March 10, 2021 Area prices were up 1.2 percent over the past two months, up 1.7 percent from a year ago Prices in the Seattle area, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), advanced 1.2 percent for the two months ending in February 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (See table A.) Assistant Commissioner for Regional Operations Richard Holden noted that the February increase was influenced by higher prices for household furnishings and operations, motor vehicle insurance, and gasoline. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, month-to-month changes may reflect seasonal influences.)

February 2021 CPI: Year-over-Year Inflation Rate Now 1 7%

z cpi1.png As a generalization - inflation accelerates as the economy heats up, while the inflation rate falling could be an indicator that the economy is cooling. However, inflation does not correlate well to the economy - and cannot be used as an economic indicator. Gasoline was the major influence on the CPI: The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.4 percent in February on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.3 percent in January, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.7 percent before seasonal adjustment. The gasoline index continued to increase, rising 6.4 percent in February and accounting for over half of the seasonally adjusted increase in the all items index. The electricity and natural gas indexes also increased, and the energy index rose 3.9 percent over the month.
